The characteristics of the chair are that there is, among other things, a separate cushion for the seat and back. The filling is made of foam rubber of different densities. There are also buttons on the chair of a high quality leather. The frame is made of high-gloss steel with a chromed finish. Leather belts support the seat cushions.

Shape and finish

The chairs designed by Mies van der Rohe were in classic forms with elegance and a perfect finish. The chairs that Mies van der Rohe designed look like they can be made in bulk at the factory, but this is certainly not the case. The chairs are finished by hand with all care and great perfection.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was born in 1886 in Aachen, that is a city in Germany. He died in Chicago in 1969. Van der Rohe was a designer of furniture and architect by profession. Because he made use of materials such as glass, natural stone and steel, he distinguished himself from other designers. He measured his designs very precisely, so that everything was tight and perfect.

He did not like too much and his motto was therefore "Less is more", a statement that poet Robert Browning once described in 1855 in one of his poems.

Architect and designer

Mies van der Rohe had followed the entrepreneur training course and then worked as a stucco designer at an architectural firm in Aachen for four years. This was from the year 1900 to 1904. In 1905 Mies van der Rohe left Germany and moved to Berlin. He worked in Berlin for two years as an architect for Bruno Paul, he was a German architect.

Mies van der Rohe also designed chairs himself, such as the Barcelona Chair. Designer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed the Barcelona Chair in 1929. He had specially made this for an organized world exhibition in Barcelona in 1929.

Mies van der Rohe has won three important prizes in his life as an architect, the AIA Gold Medal, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Royal Gold Medal.
