Manufacturer Louis Poulsen was founded in the year 1874. It was a manufacturer of all kinds of lighting. Louis Poulsen's cousin is named Ludvig R. Poulsen, he had several companies to his name. For example, from 1874 to 1878 he had a wine import company. In the year 1892 Ludvig opens his second company, he sells tools and electrical appliances. Four years later, in 1896, Ludvig Poulsen hired his cousin Louis Poulsen. Twelve years later, in 1906, Ludvig R. Poulsen died. Louis Poulsen takes over the company from that moment on.

Two years later he moves with this company that sells tools and electrical appliances to Nyhavn, which means "new port". Nyhavn is located in a port in the Danish capital Copenhagen.

 

Sophus Kaastrup-Olsen is also employed in this company five years later. A little later Louis Poulsen changed the name of the company to "Louis Poulsen & Co". They also publish a catalog and the first version appears in the year 1914. A catalog with Machines and tools. Three years later, in 1917, Sophus Kaastrup-Olsen took over the company from Louis Poulsen and went on alone.

Louis Poulsen focuses on lighting and also publishes a catalog in which all products can be seen. He published this in four languages, English, German, French and Danish.

Nowadays, Louis Poulsen is located all over the world with distribution points, offices and designers. The main sites of Louis Poulsen are located in Europe and the countries Japan, United States and Scandinavia.

Designers

The designers of the manufacturer were the designers Poul Henningsen and Arne Jacobsen. The PH lamps were a popular product.

Designer Poul Henningsen

Designer Poul Henningsen designed the "Blackout lamp" for the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. This way the gardens could be open longer. The lighting seemed so that it could not be seen by flying planes.

Poul Henningsen also designed the PH5 lamp in the year 1958. The lamp was 50 cm in diameter, this is also the meaning of the "5" of PH5.

Collaboration Louis Poulsen

Starting in 2004, Louis Poulsen's lighting company joined forces with Royal Copenhagen, Bang & Olufsen and Fritz Hansen at an exhibition in Tokyo. This exhibition was organized because of the official visit to Japan by Koninging Margrethe, Queen of Denmark. The organizer of the exhibition, called "Styling Danisch Life" was architect Tadao Ando.
